Dear Parents

SATs week is nearly over and the children have worked extremely hard. We are very proud of the efforts they have all put in, right across the school and particularly in Year 6 where the tests are so much more formal and rigid. To celebrate the children’s achievements, we have booked a bouncy castle for Friday afternoon, and all the children will have some time to have a good bounce and get rid of some of their post-test energy! Friday afternoon will also be non-uniform. The children will need to come in school uniform but may get changed at lunch-time into their mufti clothes.

The next Governors’ meeting will take place on Tuesday 23rd May. As we are always keen to hear parents views, we have decided to hold an ‘open forum’ for the first fifteen minutes of each Governors’ meeting. At this forum parents will be able to raise any issues, good or bad, that they would like to be discussed by the board of governors. Once all points have been raised by parents, the meeting will convene and the issues will be discussed as a part of that meeting. The governors will then contact parents directly to inform them of the outcomes of the discussions. We really want parents to be as involved as possible in the life of the school.

A cricket club for Year One and Two children begins tomorrow (Friday). It will be run by an official cricketing coach and take place from 3:30-4:15pm, for the next ten weeks. If you would like your child to take part, please complete the attached form and return it to the office. This club is open to all children in Year One and Two, boys and girls, and there is no limit on numbers. This is happening as a direct result of the parents’ questionnaire. We noticed that you have asked for more Key Stage One clubs, so we are now able to offer, gardening, art and cricket after school for children in Key Stage One. Let me know what else you would like to see more of, or perhaps you have a talent to share with the children…

Is your child interested in flute lessons. Flute lessons have been very popular this year and we are now trying to organise the lesson structure for next year. If you are interested in your child learning to play the flute, please call in at the office for more information.

Along with this letter is a commemorative coin to celebrate the 80th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This coin is a present from the school governors to the children to mark this special anniversary of our Queen. We hope that it is something they will look back at in years to come with fondness, thinking of their wonderful days at primary school, much like we do now when we unearth those Charles and Diana coins and mugs from our own school days.

This is the last week to collect Tesco computers for schools tokens. If you have any tokens, please send them into school so that we can add them to our collection. The box in the lobby is filled to the brim, well done and thank you.

Kilve Camp was enjoyed by all who were lucky enough to come along. Can I please ask those of you that have monies outstanding to send it into the office as soon as possible. Also I hope that you enjoyed the photographs that were sent home. If you would like to keep the CD, please would you send in £1 to help us to cover our costs. Many thanks to those of you that have already paid.

Next Wednesday (17th May) is Water Day. For the afternoon of next Wednesday children across the school will be joining together in their house groups to partake in lots of very wet activities, including water fights and ‘soak the teachers’. For this day the children will need to come to school in their normal uniform but bring with them a change of (old) clothes and a towel, as they are likely to get very wet! The children will also need a water pistol/fairy liquid bottle to join in some of the activities. It promises to be a very exciting and enjoyable day! (Although the teachers are threatening to strike if they get too wet!)

South Somerset District Council are running several events over the half term holiday for children of primary school age. For more information contact them through the Yeovil Tourist Information Centre on 01935-845946.

As school attendance plays such a large part in children’s attainment we will be sending out letters to all parents whose children’s attendance is below 90% (with the exception of Reception children who start school late, where it will be below 80%). This will be done on a half-termly basis. I appreciate that there are usually very good reasons why children’s attendance can fall below this level, however, when attendance reaches a certain level I am obliged to contact the Educational Social Worker to discuss the situation. To help prevent this from being needed, I hope that a regular update on your child’s percentage of attendance will be useful to you.

It looks like it will be a long, hot summer. I look forward to enjoying it at school with you and your children.

Yours sincerely
